OPC is actually a standard communication protocol for acquisition, based on an open model structure, it allows to push data from any industrial devices or according on their native protocol and publish it in a standard language which every single application in automation field must connect through it.

How does it do it?

OPC DA Client: vNode collects the data from any OPC Real-time Data access server, over COM/DCOM communication based on Microsoft technology. Using OPC Enumerator it can look over the host or network for OPC DA Server prog ID and start and engage to it.

OPC UA Server: remember that vNode can collect data from any data sources, but what about to export that data? vNode OPC UA Server, using standard OPC UA endpoint sends the data to an OPC UA Client that an on Linux, windows, android IOS or any other environment.

Paradigma of use 

Peter Thompson works for a system integrator company on industrial automation field, his end client, a manufacturing enterprise, need to migrate their SCADA system up to a brand new web environment in which they could manage, control and monitor all their process. The challenge for Peter is that the new web system only allows OPC UA communication, and based on the original customer architecture, all their industrial communication network based on PLCs, it’s a mix of protocols, including, Siemens, Allen Bradley, and OPC DA.

Thompson, though that he could convert those protocols up to OPC UA, but he didn’t know how to do it.

While he was looking on the internet, he found vNode Automation platform which is a basically an IoT Gateway for an industry that collects data from any data source and pushes it in different protocols, including OPC Unified Architecture. He made some contact with that company and found that they also can give him support and advice on his implementation, while they are also OPC UA trainers.

After a call, Peter achieved pulling data from one of the bunch of data sources his customer had, and vNode provide to him the URL endpoint for transfer the data over OPC UA  standards…
